The Hare Feast (seasonal event August-October)
The big celebration of the year for people who worked on the tobacco fields came with the harvesting of the last tobacco plant - "the hare plant". The plant that was the centrepiece of this feast had been singled out well in advance. This tobacco plant would always be a particularly beautiful specimen, with its leaves and inflorescences intact. It was decorated with flowers and ribbons and carried in procession back to the farm where it was hanged up in the kitchen ceiling. Afterwards, the farm owners invited all the workers to a big party with plenty of food and drink. This tradition dating back to the 18th century was particularly common in and around Stockholm.
